Underley Hall, Grade II* Listed Private School
The brief
Advice and negotiation was needed over an enforcement action at this Grade II* listed building in Kirby Lonsdale following works carried out without consent - including loss of internal veranda and original doors, installation of false ceilings, and re-roofing to the main hall.
The solution
This project required a complete building survey of the listed building and conservation plan, ongoing negotiations with the local authority, and specification of the works needed to comply with the enforcement action. A schedule of work was quickly agreed with Yorkshire Dales National Park and this commenced in May 2017.
Kings School/Residential Development
The brief
Working with this prestigious school in Macclesfield, we needed to balance the retention of the original grammar school (which had been refused listing), the demolition of some of the other buildings, and the construction of between 80 and 100 residential properties on a new development around the site. All within the Fence Avenue Conservation Area.
The solution
A heritage statement was prepared in association with the planning application to determine the impact of the development within this Conservation Area, especially on the setting of two Grade II-listed buildings nearby - the bridge on Macclesfield Canal and Holy Trinity Church. The residential masterplan was then amended to take into account the impact on the conservation area, while also outlining the original school being retained.
Semi-detached properties by architect Edgar Wood
In advance of extensive renovations as part of the Edgar Wood Society Heritage Lottery Fund, we undertook a building appraisal of the condition of these buildings, a specification of works, coordinated with the conservation/Grant Officers at Rochdale MBC, and prepared documents for the heritage fund application.
Proposed new building for Kings School
Was instructed to carry out an Impact Statement/Heritage Statement on the effect of the setting of a new building for Kings School, Macclesfield, on two listed buildings in the area. The assessment proved impact was minimal, and planning permission was called in by the Secretary of State for approval.
Retaining facade of Crown Theatre
Tasked with investigating the demolition of the main theatre in Eccles and the retention of the facade. An Archaeological Building Survey and Condition Survey determined the extent of work and cost of refurbishment - proving the front element of the building could be retained structurally but the remainder was unstable.
